The house

Gangaur Palace has stood on Gangaur Ghat Marg for about three hundred years. The rooms sit around an open courtyard. The stairs are stone. The windows are jharokhas: shallow boxes that push out from the wall under a cusped arch, deep enough to sit in, looking down into the lane.

Bagore Ki Haveli is next door. The ghat is at the end of the road and Lake Pichola a minute past it. Most of what you came to Udaipur for is within a ten-minute walk, and the lanes are too narrow to drive anyway.

There are eighteen rooms on three floors, and no two floors are laid out the same way. A handicraft shop takes up part of the ground floor. The stairs carry on up to the terrace, which looks across the rooftops to the water. There is more on the courtyard and the architecture, and the two room categories are described in full.

Inside the haveli

Havelis were built inward. From the street you see a carved door and a row of shuttered openings and very little else. The house turns instead towards its courtyard, which brings light and air down through the floors.

Gangaur Palace still works that way. Cusped arches frame the galleries. Jharokhas lean out over the lane. The stair climbs past painted pillars to the roof.
